Art!stik Labor

Contemporary circus, dance and music performance

A European cooperation between
• Compagnie Aquanaut – circus company
• Ensemble Marges – chamber ensemble
• Jordi L. Vidal – choreographer/stage director

ART!stik-LABOR was created as a platform for interdisciplinary research. A dialogue between circus elemtents and contemporary music allows both art forms to enrich one another and can reveal surprising results.

New aesthetics evolve with the unususal combination of aerial acrobatics, dance, clowning, physical theatre and contemporary music performed live by a chamber ensemble. As a synthesis of a concert and a performance ART!stik-LABOR offers a new experience for the audience, as listeners as much as spectators. The Circus arts are enhanced by the experimental music and become experimental themselves. Likewise, contemporary music, often difficult to access, becomes an intuitive experience through the scenic interpretation. Interweaving music and performance, the musicians act on stage and are involved in the choreography.

Parameters of the performance include velocity, vertical and horizontal axes, quality of movement and sound sensuality. The work speaks to different conditions of interpersonal relationships. Situations and stories of everyday life are absorbed and reiterated with their strange and sometimes scary poetry. Humour, clowning, and often downright absurdity convey an irresistible sense of levity. Performing stunning aerial acrobatics at a height of up to 8 meters, the performance is punctuated by moments that will take your breath away. The piece revolves around themes associated with the submission and resistance to gravity; falling, allowing one to fall, dropping, and getting dropped.

“To test reality we must see it on the tight-rope.” (Oscar Wilde)
